Errors saving projects with 4.27, .tmp files created
Hi,
Anybody else getting errors when trying to save a project? If not I assume it's my screwy Win11 installation. Either way, I need a new computer...
When I try to save a project I get an error message (just a popup with something similar to "Can't save [filename]". A .tmp file is created at that time, and if I change the extension to ".aren" it seems to run ok. It also seems to incorporate the new project structure (although I can't seem to get the "save columns" switch to work as yet, even though the new column shows up in the .aren file - I still get the original column configuration).
Best,
DF

Heya Delta!
I've saved new projects and also revised old aren files with no apparent issues (knock on wooden heads). Win 11 Pro 24H2
Reboot your PC. When things get screwy it really helps.
If it doesn't, please post a sample .aren file -- or a recipe -- that always triggers the problem.
Regards,
Randy

Hi R,
I've rebooted. We're running the same OS, but a while back (years ago) I installed some crazy program to supposedly tweak certain settings in the registry (I think it was called WinAeroTweaker, but I'm not sure). I uninstalled it pretty quickly, but I must have left some malignant chad a-hangin', because ever since then I can't get certain Windows standard dialog boxes, and some other strange stuff (e.g., until Kim made that "Update" option in the Save menu option I was unable to save an .aren file in v4.x - I had to port whatever I wrote to v3.95 and save it there, then open it using double-click in a file manager to get it into the "recently used" dropdown in v4). I don't know if this makes any sense to anyone but me, but that has been my drill to get new method batches working in the past.
Like I said, I need a new computer anyway, I'll just install everything fresh on it when I get it. I was just curious if this was another manifestation of my ongoing 'situation', and indeed it seems to be. Thanks for letting me know! :)
Best,
DF

The program will write the project to a tmp file and move the file to overwrite the existing .aren file afterwards. If the move fails, you will get an error.

Ah, so it could be a windows permissions mismatch.
DF should try "Run as administrator" on Aren and see if it still fails,

Nope. Still no joy.
Doesn't matter though. Renaming the temp files works just fine for me, for now. I think... Actually, since I increment version number every save it's probably better this way.
Thanks for thinking about it! :)

Bummer. There's still about two or three other permissions/ownership issues it could be -- or even more arcane Windoze [censored].
Why haven't I moved to Linux yet?! ;P
PS. I have a batch file + Aren Project that "snapshots" my incrementing files (unless they are in Git).
I just right click or "Send-to" the files and "Bing. Done".
Alas it sometimes fails similarly to one of the problems that Master Sahu reported ( https://www.advancedrenamer.com/forum_thread/exiftool-subsec timeoriginal-collision-empty-tag-output-when-chaining-new-17 524 ).
I've a low-priority to-do to write it up here.

Hey Randy,
I started out on CP/M, then UNIX, then MS/DOS. I really loved UNIX with XWindows; too bad Bell Labs didn't realize what they had and actually market that $*!t. I mean, they were all "well, it's for engineers and scientists... what good would it do for normal humans?" Yeah, right. Hewlett-Packard did make a UNIX PC to compete with the IBM XT, but they never marketed it to even a minimal extent, and they certainly didn't explain why it would be useful in, oh, say business. I did start to work on VAX OS when I was working at MIT (look at me dropping name cred!) but it was just CP/M done right.
All this preamble to say, I never have liked Linux, especially as a "personal" computer OS; although I did like BSD... but as a server-side OS, when I was doing systems administration, because of the security. It was never developed to be a client service as far as I know.
Anyway, I know there's more I could do, down to grooming the registry, but I'm not going to. Like I said, I make accommodations for the "quirks" and I'll straighten it out on my next system... if I live that long. :) I do have an old dual-processor system sitting around my house that I use as a side table, maybe I'll dust it off...
BTW, any thoughts on Sagar's problem? I'd have thought you would have fixed my code by now! :)

DF

I skimmed it. Don't have time to do more for a day or four and I still haven't written up my possibly-related bug.
I didn't analyze your code but noted that it looked more polished than some earlier JS. ;)

Randy

Really? I just added one line to Sagar's code! LOL Not much polish necessary there, my friend...
