Exif Info on Files with No Extension

This feature disappeared some time ago, a year at least, could be more?

So, if I had say... a font file without the OTT or TTF extension Advanced Renamer still provided EXIF info so I could name with the proper extension (lower case I might add).

So, it's gone. ExifTool can still produce the exifdata by adding a *. as the file name.

Is there something I can do to get that feature back?

cheers!

Reply to #1:
Advanced Renamer will only execute ExifTool for file types that are supported. If the file is missing the file extension you need to add the extension before you can extract metadata from that file.

If a file doesn't have a file extension the program has to guess the file type in order to read the file properly. There are so many file extensions that share similar file structures that this form of file type detection will have a significant amount of errors. As an example, many RAW image file types use the TIFF format and store metadata in the same way. The actual encoding of the image might be different, but Advanced Renamer doesn't care about that. The same goes for container based formats like QTFF used for MP4, MOV, HEIC, and CR3.

File type detection is difficult. That is why correct file type extensions are so important.
Hey Kim,

Thanks very much for the explanation. :-)

One of the problems I see in my particular case is that say I add an extension of TTF to the files, the exif info is being overridden by the actual extension, say if it's actually an OTF.

Anyway, I found a solution that works for me, I had said it used to work, and from the download page I got the final version 3, and that works as before, ie: w/out extension.

So, thanks again, good quick replies on the forum here and a great product, I plug it whenever I can.
