How do I BATCH Rename 8TB of MP4 Files in one Folder on a SATA / NTFS - 12TB hard drive?
JOB: BATCH Rename 8TB of MP4 Files in a Folder on a SATA / NTFS - 12TB hard drive
Advanced Renamer 4.18.1
PC = Windows 11 Pro
Drive Name of 12TB SATA / NTFS hard drive is: MASTER-1
The Folder containing the 2,818 mp4 files on drive MASTER-1 is: 2818 MVI files to Rename
The MP4 file names in folder 2818 MVI files to Rename range from MVI_0074.mp4 to MVI_8164.mp4 with a few file names like: MVI_2333(2).mp4 “and” MVI_2333.mp4 , but the two are NOT duplicates.
I want to use the “Date modified” or “Media created” dates which are always the same. I do not want the time, just the date.
Sample INPUT of one of the 2818 mp4 file name and date: MVI_0074.mp4 11/7/2019
This is the desired OUTPUT from the above input: 2019-11-07-00-00-MVI_0074.mp4
YYYY-MM-DD-00-00-
NOTE: there MUST NOT be any DAY or MONTH that is 1 digit , I must have TWO digits for sorting.
THANKS for taking a look :-)

First, I recommend that you upgrade to version 4.19 ( https://www.advancedrenamer.com/download ) -- just so we're all singing from the same hymn book.
Then it should be as simple as:
1) Create a new "Add" method:
1 A) For the "Add" field use ]<Date Modified:yyyy-mm-dd>-00-00-[ . . . without the ][
1 B) At index: 1
1 C) All other checkboxes cleared/unchecked
Files like "MVI_2333(2).mp4", etc will process as expected. If you want additional handling for those, let us know.

Always good to know more Texicans! Just don't close the gates before I can move back. ;)

THANKS for the help!!!
I upgraded to 4.19 without a problem.
I am going to stop now and create a few test SATA drives, each containing a good sampling of the 8TB of 2818 mp4 files to be batch renamed.
I will be offline for a while.
I will post when I have successfully batch renamed all 2818 mp4 files , or come back with more dumb questions:-)
Y'all have a GREAT DAY!!!

Good Luck!
Also note that even if you don't trust Aren's preview of the changes, Aren also has an "Undo" feature for previous jobs.
But I'm a big believer in multiple safeguards and backups. So cloning the files is prudent. Be sure to use a tool like TeraCopy, or similar, that verifies copies as/after they are made. Windows copy has burned me plenty (Like just about every Microsoft product).
BeyondCompare is also a good tool for syncing and comparing.
Have a Great Day and Godspeed!

I created three SATA hard drives and copied 50 of the mp4 files into a folder on each drive -np.
ADD field was <Date Modified:yyyy-mm-dd>-00-00-
( without the ][ )
index was 1
(a single numeric digit)
All other checkboxes cleared/unchecked
(as best that I could, but was cofusing to me)
THIS IS THE OUTPUT:
Filename column MVI_0346.MP4
New Filename column 2020-02-19-00-00-MVI_0346.MP4
Path column F:\2818 MVI files to rename
Error column Invalid tag
ALL of the above 4 items were in a bright RED color
ALL 50 out of 50 MP4 files were red in all 4 columns - so ALL 50 MP4 had a problem.
EVERYTHING looks GREAT, except each has a problem that I do not see , the "Invalid tag" error.
LOL, so close , but so far away :-)

Weird. I can't get version 4.19 to give me an "Invalid tag" error, even when I use invalid tags!?!!
It just gives me a new name that's not desired.
Anyway, Sorry about the checkbox confusion. I just meant make sure that the "Backwards" and "Use regular expressions" checkboxes were unset.
Your interface should look like this: https://imgur.com/a/correct-config-that-add-method-4BjgbGi
It should not matter in your case but you might also make sure that metadata is enabled like: https://imgur.com/a/metadata-troubleshooting-aren-CrWFAWR
Although if not needed, turning it off can speed up processing large numbers of files.
Anywho, try:
1) Restart Aren and then clear the renaming methods ( Ctrl-P, then "Methods > Clear" is one way. Using the button near the top left is another. )
2) Recreate the Add method per my first screenshot, carefully copying and pasting the Add field.
If that still doesn't work, clear the list again, just add a new Name method (Use "foo", etc.) and test it against one of the files just to verify that Aren will work on them.
Let us know how it goes. and Good Luck!

I got no error using that tag/string in an add method. Gene, be mindful of the scrollwheel, I often change fields in ARen methods accidentally (like "At index: or "Apply to:") because I accidentally scroll while over one of the fields. (I can attest that if you scroll the "At index:" field to 0, the add won't work--I just did it).
That said, I'm not sure what that particular error is about. As Randy said, I don't think I've ever seen that error.
EDIT: And after saying that, I was immediately able to throw that error by using two angle brackets at either the start or the end of the tag. END EDIT
Best,
DF

LOL, do not aske me how I did it, but I THINK the job is running now:-)
At bottom of screen, it shows that ity saw 2818 files and Zero errors, and Status: OK , but I do not see ANY thing on the screen changing?
There are some options underloined in blue , like Add all items , etc,
Is the PC waiyting on me to click something ???
My plan at the moment is to just wait for 4 hours and see if something happens :-)

You need to press the "Start batch" button in the upper right.
Your Aren Job should take a few minutes at most and display a progress bar if it takes more than a second.
But note that the progress bar disappears once the job is done (at least for me).
The you will see that either the filelist is now empty or that the files all show their new names under "Filename" -- depending on how you have set your options.

UPDATE: when I clicked on the ---Add all items --- option I then had every 2818 mp4 file renamed EXACTLY as I wanted. I was able to easily find the videos of what we were doing Christmas 2021 without searching. All I have to do now is add this 8TB of files to the 24TB MASTER of similar files, and everything auto sorts.
I have one more SATA disk with 34,000 JPG files to rename, similar to the 2818 mp4 we just renamed, then I will be finished with everything I had planned to do in 2025. That is my next rename project:-)
THANKS to everyone for your kind help, I would NEVER have gotten this job done without you!!!!

You're welcome and that's Great!
Note that by default, Aren only does 10K files at a time. So best to break that 34,000 files into 4 batches.

Randy

THANKS, I did not know about the 10K limit.!!!
The last rename of the 2818 mp4 files is taking ~ 18 or so hours per copy, so it will be a few days before I can post my last job details.
I have two SATA and two USB 24TB MASTERs that are 100% the same bit for bit copies to be only used to make more copies. Hopefully, all these years of taking photos and video starting in 1965 will survive for generations for my family to be able to see what their ancestors were really like:-)
If it were not for the links to the graphics, I could NEVER have made any Aren rename work.
THANKS AGAIN,

Good day, all.
Randy.
I went back and checked my purchase of Aren 4.19 and my paperwork shows that my License Key gives me the following:
I have the PERSONAL $25.00 plan.
File limit per batch = Unlimited (Free version = 10,000)
Max methods per batch = Unlimited (Free version = 10)
IF the above is accurate, then there should be no problem with a SATA drive folder containing all the 33,903 JPG files. All 33,903 JPG files have a good Date Modified.
I really should not have to create 4 seperate SATA hard drives because of the 10,000 rule, as it does not apply to me, I think :-)
Could this job be this easy?:
1:Add
Add <Date Modified:yyyy-mm-dd>-00-00-
At index: 1
****** EXCEPT that these are JPG files , and not mp4, as the last JOB???******
BTW – the entire 33,903 jpg files takes up only 112GB
Will this JOB take a long time to run? I read somewhere that it could.
Hope everyone had a GREAT weekend!

Good day!
I knew from your past posts that you had purchased a license. I still strongly recommend renaming 10K at a time because the processing time goes up exponentially the more files you do at a time.
You do not need to have the files be on separate drives to achieve the 10K, but I sense that that may be easiest for you.
And yes, the exact same rename method will work on JPG. Or on any other extension (with a couple of esoteric exceptions that do not apply here).
Scroll up and see the linked images about turning metadata on and off. With the metadata off, the job(s) should go faster.
Have fun, it sounds like you're almost done! :D

Good day all, hope everyone is having a beautiful Veterans Day we are here on Lake Travis.
Randy.
LOL, I gave up trying to separate the 339, 900 jpg files into 4 folders of exactly 8475 files,
I never could see a way to do it, so I did the only thing I could think of & purchased
Vovsoft – File Splitter 1.2 for $20 or so : -)
I now have 4 folders of exactly 8475 jpgs that “all” have a valid Date Modified.
These 4 folders are on the internal 1TB fast SSD and the renamed files will also
be on this SSD – so I am hoping the run time will not be too bad.
The next step will be to mount one of the four 24TB drives that are complete,
except for adding the Re-Named four folders, and copy the four folders 1,2,3,4,
over one at a time. Then repeat this step again three more times for the other 24TB.
At the end, I SHOULD have four identical 24TB drives that will be used ONLY to
create 24TB disk copies to distribute to family members. LOL – at least that is the plan!
I will use Aren 4.19 and basically repeat what we did with the mp4 files earlier.
1:Add
Add: <Date Modified:yyyy-mm-dd>-00-00-
At index: 1
If anyone sees anything I got wrong or missing from above, please advise.
See y’all again when I complete the above, at least that is the plan:- )
THANKS!!!

JOB FINISHED – MASTER-1 Database is completed !!
Over the years a LOT of folks have helped me accumulate
what must be one of the largest private databases of photos,
videos, and audio in the world.
I started actively collecting paper photos with my little Kodak
Brownie ~ 1955 as I remember.
Eventually, everything ended up digitized and is part of the
current 24TB MASTER-1 database - which we have been
working on in this forum.
I would like to especially thank my grandson Nick for writing the
first ps1 code to rename, and “Randy” and others in this forum.
I would “NEVER” have finished this project without your
kind help and encouragement !!!!
As of today, EVERY photo, video, and audio file can be found
in the database by simply searching the prefix. So if anyone
wanted to know what they got for Christmas 2004 with photos
and video – just go to 2004-12-25. It’s all there.
I am anxious to start looking into an idea I have always had.
I have always wanted to know “what was my great, great,
grandparents really like. Do I talk like them? What were
their mannerisms?
This MASTER-1 database can answer these questions now
for my children, their children and their children, etc.
I have always suspected it, but now I can see it in the videos.
FYI: Everything that had metadata is in MASTER-1.
I have two more sets of data that need to be
preserved in a new MASTER-2.
Data set 1 is: 804 MP4 with 2 to 4 hr videos each that do not have
ANY metadata with a date. Every mp4 file name is of no help, like
10093.mp4. The video quality is great, but I can only guess the date.
Data set 2 is fixable, but may take too long for me to finish, as I am 83.
They are ~ 800 DVD-R 4.7GB disks that are images from many
camcorders, like my old Canon VIXIA.
I did keep a hand written date and description of all 800 disks, so I
can attach a YYYY-MM-DD with description to each 800 numbered disks.
I assume that there is also metadata in each DVD?
I may just copy each DVD to a folder on a 24TB hard drive and let
my future generations complete the job someday.
Who knows, we may have AI that can do it by then :- )
Y’all may hear from me again in the future, but for now I have to
put this project aside and get ready for Thanksgiving, Christmas,
and a herd of Longhorns that will be delivered in a few days to
graze here on Lake Travis this winter.
I have to go cow-proof the place because if they can’t push it
over, step on it and break it, they will always poop on it :- )
Having said that, I still love watching them!
Hope everyone has a Blessed life!
Go hug someone you love.

You are an inspiration to this 77yo youngster... I hope your offspring and families appreciate you!
btw, I have two farms just across the road from me that run cattle, so I get to enjoy the watching without having to endure the pooping. :) Their fields are very green though...
Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, best wishes and blessings to you,

Yes, that's awesome!
But with respect, if poop is a problem, your pastures ain't big enough. ;)
My family's issue is that our dang dogs and steers never get along. Fortunately, no big injuries so far.
Merry Christmas, Blessings, and all the rest to you both.

But with respect, if poop is a problem, your pastures ain't big enough. ;)
My family's issue is that our dang dogs and steers never get along. Fortunately, no big injuries so far.
Merry Christmas, Blessings, and all the rest to you both.
