How to search in the Replacement List
My question is: How can I search the Replacement List? Please respond; thanks in advance.

I'm sorry, Wim, I don't understand exactly what you mean. Are you asking if there's a way to search the names in the "New Filename" (preview) column? Or do you mean a way to search the Method List? Or something else?
Could you supply more information, maybe an example?
Thanks!
Best,
DF

Thank you for your reply. I'll describe my problem. I have several Replacement lists. These are visible in the left pane. Checking them makes them active when renaming files. Most of them are small, making it relatively easy to view them in the window with multiple rows (pair: L Replace and R Replace With [for example, replacing "no." with "no"]).
However, I have a Replacement list with a lot of rows. It contains all kinds of characters and words with their replacement values.
Sometimes, however, I see an error that I want to correct, but then I have to scroll through the entire list and move the cursor over 500 times. Now I'd like to know if there's a way to search for a search term in those two columns with many rows. If that's not possible, it would help if I could generate a text file of them. Then I can look in it to see what I did wrong when creating a particular pair.
For example: "no." becomes "no"; This causes an undesirable substitution for some words. Searching for the term "no." takes a long time before I find it to edit.
I hope this is now sufficiently clear in this wonderful program!
Thank you in advance for your help.
Kind regards,
Wim van Esch

Hi Wim,
Thank you, that clears the situation up I think. Probably just a language version difference.
Anyway, I'm afraid I don' have really good news for you. There is, unfortunately, no great way to do what you are asking, at least insofar as I've been able to find. If you open the .aren file you've saved your batch in into a text editor like Notepad++ you can see much more of what's going on, but it's saved in a way that is convenient for a computer to read, not a human. In other words, it's been reformatted so that the Replace column is entirely separate from the Replace With column, AND (if you use regular expressions, anyway ) extra characters have been added so the computer can differentiate between commands and simple characters. Additionally you run the risk of accidentally changing something you didn't mean to change, thereby creating more problems for yourself. If you open *any* computer-readable file in an editor, *always* have a backup copy.
EDIT: And you'll probably be better of if you keep your replacement list/list replace methods short and make more of them. Even on my 4k monitor the program doesn't show more than about 11 lines, at least in the version I'm using, so that's the limit I use and would recommend. END EDIT
After 11+ years of using Advanced Renamer (and having been a computer professional since the 1980s), I have come to the point where I use the Replacement List method (it's called List Replace in my translation, the source of my original glitch) VERY sparingly, and only for short sequences of replacements. For the reason we just discussed, and some others, I find a simple string of "Replace" methods, with just one Replace/Replace With pair per panel, to be much easier and more efficient to manage. The ability to document each replacement (with the [right-click]-"Change Description" context menu option) alone tips my opinion. In the past I've used lists of several hundred replace methods, mostly replace; if you have a large monitor and use the description consistently you can get a much better idea of what's going on in your method list. PLUS, with that ability to open the .aren file in a text editor, you can then use the description to search the .aren file successfully – since the program pretty much inserts the description line directly into the file without alteration.
Of course all that is just my opinion, feel free to ignore it. I will absolutely not be offended. :) And stay tuned, someone else here might have some ingenious way of doing what you want in another way...
Best regards,
DF

Thanks for your quick response, Delta Foxtrot.
I'll take your suggestion to heart.
I have smaller replacement lists for some types of characters, but one large one with approximately 900 rows.
I use Advanced Renamer to catalog my classical music collection, which includes many composers, many orchestras, many conductors, many soloists in many pieces recorded in different years, all organized into tracks per album.
Manual replacement is virtually impossible. Therefore, working with short lists isn't very practical for me.
I also use Notepad++, along with Search Everything and Advanced Renamer for the files, and the Tagscanner program to edit the tags of music pieces.
With Notepad++, I can use the search function and will try it out without modifying the *.aren file.
Windows only allows a limited number of characters in folders, sub folders, and files. Therefore, I have to shorten extended names to work with them effectively. An example:
Ludwig van Beethoven - Concerto for Piano & Orchestra No. 5 (Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Herbert van Karajan)
becomes
LvB - PiCo5 (WF Karajan)
And what about an opera with many soloists and the roles they play? Hence.
I thank you very much for your efforts, and perhaps someday a version will be released in which this is possible. But for now, I am grateful that this program exists.
Sincerely,
Wim van Esch

I don't think it is something you can do right now, but I have some ideas for changes to the program that will make that possible. I'm just about to release version 4.16, but maybe the version after can have the functionality you need.

OK, Kim.
It would be great if you could make this possible in the future!
I've now placed the rows in two columns next to each other in Word from Notepad++.
This gives me an overview, and when scrolling, I can more easily see where I need to be to change a few things.
I'll keep this in mind for the next (4.17) version of your wonderful program.
Thanks for your reply.
