Rename folder full of shortcuts
Hello,
I have a folder full of shortcuts which I would like to rename, but when I try to add them, AR opens where the shortcut leads to instead.
Is there a way to do what I want?
thnx.

Hello,
This appears to be a bug in version 4.21.
I *suspect* it might apply to all version 4s so far but I haven't downloaded those to check.
Link/shortcut renaming works for me with version 3.95 (portable). Download that to rename your shortcuts for now.

Hi Kath, Randy,
It's not a bug... Kim has made it clear that v 4.x no longer works on shortcuts/links, because somehow they could be problematic. I'm not sure how, as I used it in version 3.95, and still use that version when I want to work on links. I have 3.95 and 4.21 both installed on my system; it works great for me.
Best,
DF

Thanks Randy, DF, I will give 3.95 a try!
edit:
Tried 3.95 and no go, tried 3.87 no go. I suppose i'll just have to rename all the original files and create new shortcuts.
Ta for the replies!

Kath,
I don't understand. I can load any windows link file (.lnk) into 3.95 and do whatever with it. Are you saying when you drag link files into ARen v3.95 it's loading the linked files instead?
Best,
DF

Hi DF, so weird..I didn't do it that way before, I just used 'Add Files' with the button on the menu.
Just tried it the way you suggested...and it works!
Many thanks!
Btw thanks Randy for the link to 3.95!

It is correct that it is not a bug. For version 4 I have decided that shortcut files should not be supported. The reason is too many issues with this type of file in version 3. You might find that it works for you in version 3, but then it might not work for some specific case. It works inconsistently, and I haven't spent the time investigating what works and what doesn't. Batch renaming is a niche problem ... batch renaming Windows shortcut files is a very small niche within a niche.

You're welcome!
Also, if you don't want to keep track of several versions of Aren, PowerRename works great for links/shortcuts.
And it's open-source, constantly improving, and works properly from Windows Explorer's context menu.
I find it easier for many one-off tasks, but it doesn't yet work as well as Aren for complex stuff, dates, metadata, or saved methods.
PowerRename is part of Microsoft PowerToys (Many of which are also quite useful).
You can download it from the MS store: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/xp89dcgq3k6vld
Or from GitHub: https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/releases
(Scroll down for the installers)
